LASER SPECTRAL ANALYSIS Exfo Electro-Optical Engineering's Photonic & Life Sciences Div. has announced a software package that automates laser spectral analysis. Used with a Fabry-Perot interferometer-based laser spectrum analyzer, FPS-250 NuView measures characteristics such as laser linewidth, longitudinal mode separation, frequency stability and jitter. The user places the cursor on selected peaks and reads the results, yielding more precise data and eliminating the need to rely on manual interpretation of rough oscilloscope gradations.

Fabry-Perot interferometer
A multiple-beam interferometer, usually consisting of two flat plates, with high reflective ability. The plates are set parallel to one another by spacers so that lightwaves may bounce back and forth between them several times. The requirements for constructive interference of reflected lightwaves of a given wavelength can be fulfilled only at particular angles, relative to the normal to the plates.
