A high-brightness 5-kW ytterbium fiber laser suitable for remote welding has been announced by IPG Photonics Corp. Operating at 1070 nm, it offers 100-µm fiber delivery, rapid response modulation, >25% wall plug efficiency, and an industrial interface that includes digital, analog and telecontrol of the laser parameters. Long standoff distances on conventional cutting and welding applications reduce the risk of damage at the output end of the fiber.

Denoting the use of binary notation; i.e., the representation of data by bits (1 or 0).
fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
