A cuvette spectrofluorometer that can detect picomolar-range concentrations of fluorophores in solutions has been introduced by Ocean Optics Inc. The fully integrated Curie fluorescence system provides spectral analysis over the 200- to 850-nm range and has a high-sensitivity 2048-element CCD array detector that is coated with an order-sorting filter to eliminate second- and third-order effects. Proprietary linear variable filters spectrally shape the excitation energy from the onboard pulsed xenon lamp and eliminate the need for scanning monochromators.

An automatic scanning instrument that is used to study a substance's fluorescence over a wide range of wavelengths. It consists of a radiation source, a grating that functions as the monochromator in selecting the exciting radiation, a second grating that serves as the emission monochromator, and a photoelectric device that is used to detect the emissions.
