LumiBright LED LumiBright from Innovations in Optics Inc. of Woburn, Mass., is a LED-based light source that produces extreme brightness and high uniformity. Available in white light as well as in a variety of colors from 380 to 629 nm, it uses an array of high-brightness LED chips densely packed on a single header that consists of a metal-clad circuit board. The board powers the LEDs and functions as a thermal conductor to dissipate heat to an external heat sink. An optic captures light from the chips and redirects it into a smaller cone angle.

By precisely controlling the phosphor deposition process and the ratio of the various colors on the header, color temperature can be tuned from 3000 to 10,000 K.

Standard LumiBright offerings include 40° and 20° half-angle outputs. The former is suited to mate with fiber optics because the output angle matches the acceptance angle of the fiber. It is being evaluated as a potential replacement for metal halide and xenon arc lamps, and as the light source for a fiber optic-based lighting system for use on naval vessels.

The 20° version is generally used without fiber optics for high-intensity direct illumination applications, such as machine vision, projection systems, surgical lighting, UV polymer curing and genetic screening.
