With High-Efficiency Epitaxy Bars
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 28, 2005 -- Coherent's newest fiber array package (FAP) diode lasers, now available at 940 nm and 980 nm, produce 40 W of CW power through an 800-µm fiber bundle, with a numerical aperture of <0.11. The lasers are conduction cooled and produce a wall-plug efficiency of >50 percent, significantly higher than the 35-percent efficiency of earlier generation FAPs.
   This FAP is first in a series of high-brightness products that utilize high-efficiency epitaxy bars. High efficiency lowers the power supply requirements of the FAP itself, resulting in reduced system cost, size and weight and reduces the amount of dissipated heat, minimizing the number or power of thermoelectric coolers required in the system, Coherent said. Another benefit of high efficiency is increased lifetime due to the decreased junction temperature rise of the device.

The new FAP products are primarily intended for medical applications and fiber laser pumping. Medical uses include dermatology and cardiac surgery. As pump lasers, Coherent said, they are also well-suited for both erbium- and ytterbium-doped fiber lasers.
