OXFORD, England, May 5 -- Oxford Electronics Ltd. has released an optical fiber feedthrough suitable for ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) use. It uses the company's CuBall metal-coated optical fiber, which is brazed inside a stainless steel tube, allowing it to make a UHV seal without the use of epoxy, eliminating outgassing problems. Matching fiber cables for inside the vacuum chamber are also available that use the same fiber brazed into SMA connectors or ferrules, enabling the use of an epoxy-free optical fiber system. Multimode ultraviolet and infrared versions are available.

A thin filament of drawn or extruded glass or plastic having a central core and a cladding of lower index material to promote total internal reflection (TIR). It may be used singly to transmit pulsed optical signals (communications fiber) or in bundles to transmit light or images.
