A combination fiber optic transceiver and compatible transceiver integrated circuit is being developed by Hewlett-Packard Co. The system will provide a complete physical-layer interface for gigabit-per-second Ethernet LANs with link lengths up to 2 km. The company says it will be the first to offer complete physical-layer-technology solutions to meet standards for Gbit Ethernet at a 1.25-GBd line rate. The transceiver modules use 850-nm VCSELs for short distances and 1300-nm Fabry-Perot laser technology for longer link lengths.
