Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (Taos) Inc. has launched the TSL2560 and TSL2561 light-to-digital converters for use in notebooks and tablet PCs, mobile phones, LCD monitors, and digital cameras and televisions. They convert light intensity to a digital signal output that interfaces directly via I2C or SMBus. They are suitable for ambient light sensing in display backlighting and keyboard illumination applications. The single-chip devices enable automatic management of display panel backlighting, which can account for up to 40% of total platform power. They are available in two standard six-pin packages: chip scale and transfer molded board.
