For Endoscopes, Bronchoscopes and Other
Imaging Instruments That Require Sterilization
PARABIAGO, Italy, March 1, 2006 -- The new line of three-channel color prisms from high-performance optical and optoelectronic components and systems maker Optec SpA answers the need for three-chip color cameras that can tolerate standard autoclave sterilization from manufacturers of endoscopes, bronchoscopes, remote surgical systems and other imaging instruments requiring sterilization, according to the manufacturer. These prisms are fabricated entirely of glass with dichroic coatings and cemented with a new, proprietary adhesive developed for Optec to resist autoclave temperatures and rapid temperature cycling.

The autoclavable prisms can:

  • Withstand 134 °C soaking temperature indefinitely.
  • Survive more than 1000 autoclave cycles.
  • Model for image sensor formats from ? in. to over 1 in.
  • Produce erect images on all outputs.
  • Come in standard and custom color bands.
Optec said it also provides its comprehensive sensor alignment services in support of these prisms to offer fully aligned, cemented and tested three-chip assemblies for camera manufacturers, using any CCD or CMOS sensor they prefer. Prism assemblies can also include low-expansion mounting plates and standard lens mounts.

Pricing depends on the size and level of assembly required, but is generally in the range of $500 to $5000 per unit in 100-unit quantities. Optec provides design services for custom sizes and coatings. Delivery of first samples is typically 12 weeks after receipt of order. GLOSSARY
camera
A light-tight box that receives light from an object or scene and focuses it to form an image on a light-sensitive material or a detector. The camera generally contains a lens of variable aperture and a shutter of variable speed to precisely control the exposure. In an electronic imaging system, the camera does not use chemical means to store the image, but takes advantage of the sensitivity of various detectors to different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. These sensors are transducers...
color
The attribute of visual experience that can be described as having quantitatively specifiable dimensions of hue, saturation, and brightness or lightness. The visual experience, not including aspects of extent (e.g., size, shape, texture, etc.) and duration (e.g., movement, flicker, etc.).
dichroic
Exhibiting the quality of dichroism.
prism
A transparent optical element having at least two polished plane faces inclined relative to each other, from which light is reflected or through which light is refracted.
sensor
1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
