WATFORD, England, June 27, 2006 -- FiberLogix, a manufacturer of specialty fibers, has announced the latest offering in its range of optical fibers -- polyimide-coated fiber for applications in the oil and gas, aerospace, sensors, defense, medical and security industries.

The new fibers offer a wide operating temperature range, from -65 to 400 °C, with long-term operation at 360 °C in harsh operating environments. Typically, the company said, the polyimide-coated fibers available in the marketplace are manufactured by a single polymer with many thin layers to form overall coating. However, FiberLogix uses two proprietary polymers to form dual layers on the fiberglass cladding. The inner soft material protects the fiber from microbend forces and offers good adhesion to the glass cladding. The thin outer layer is hard and provides abrasion resistance and minimizes friction.

Due to its dual layer configuration and proprietary polymers, the company said it is best suited for applications where high strength and low bending loss is required, such as strain, health and pressure monitoring in structural, geophysical and medical sensing.

The polyimide coating makes the fiber extremely robust and durable under harsh environments at elevated temperatures. The product line consists of single mode compatible to SMF 28, High NA; multimode, both 62.5/125 and 50/125; and 80 µm fiber. The fiber offers tight and high performance optical and mechanical specifications with tight dimension tolerances. It provides high uniformity and lot-to-lot consistency.

The new fibers join the company's other fiber products, like Peek-coated, high temperature acrylate and high NA fibers. and are also available in stainless steel tubes or with Peek buffer at very competitive prices, FiberLogix said.
