Developed in partnership with the US Naval Air Systems Command, Optra Inc.’s Laser Event Recorder is now commercially available. It measures, characterizes and documents laser exposures to protect personnel working with or at risk of exposure to laser illumination. The battery-powered device operates autonomously for up to 6 h against continuous and pulsed laser sources in the visible and the near-IR. It detects laser energy and extracts irradiance levels, wavelength, pulse duration and repetition frequency, and time and location of exposure. Irradiance levels are compared with the appropriate ANSI standard, and a warning is issued if an eye safety hazard is detected. The recorder measures 5 × 8 × 13 cm and weighs 700 g.

pulsed laser
A laser that emits energy in a series of short bursts or pulses and that remains inactive between each burst or pulse. The frequency of the pulses is termed the pulse-repetition frequency.
