BERLIN, Oct. 16, 2006 -- Lumics, a manufacturer of pump laser modules and laser chips, introduces the uncooled LU0915T065 fiber-coupled laser module with up to 6.5 W output power at 915 nm pump wavelength. The product is using Lumics' new chip generation with more than 60 percent electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiency, the company said.

Lumics introduces this new chip generation laser diode device in an uncooled TO220 package coupled with a 105/125-µm multimode fiber. The footprint of the laser diode is specified with only 22 x 11 mm including a 2.7-mm screw hole for mounting to a heat sink.

The new package design is used as a platform for the series of high-power single-emitter laser diodes at the 808-nm, 915-nm and 975-nm pump wavelengths with an excellent cost/performance ratio, the company said. The modules can be air cooled with standard heat sink components for the popular TO220 footprint. Lifetime is specified with 40.000 h MTTF.

The target applications include ytterbium fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers; the new generation of high-power modules allows a cost-effective laser system design with enhanced performance.

The complete module assembly is based on fully automated active fiber alignment technology. The production is ISO 9001-approved with several screening steps throughout the chip manufacturing and module assembly process.

The operating current is specified with typically 7.2 A. The very low forward voltage is specified with max. 1.8 V; the numerical aperture multimode fiber is specified with NA=0.22. The threshold current is typically 500 mA and the laser diode is isolated to the ground. The performance of the device is based on Lumics proprietary chip technology which ensures very high reliability with a breakthrough in laser facet passivation, according to the company.

GLOSSARY
chip
1. A localized fracture at the end of a cleaved optical fiber or on a glass surface. 2. An integrated circuit.
diode
A two-electrode device with an anode and a cathode that passes current in only one direction. It may be designed as an electron tube or as a semiconductor device.
fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
