Displaytech Inc. has introduced a spatial light modulator for use in holographic data storage devices. Data can be written to the storage disks, which have 10 to 100 times greater capacity than high-definition DVDs. Using proprietary ferroelectric liquid-crystal-on-silicon technology, the modulator offers a high-speed write rate, integrated electronics, simplified packaging and a microdisplay manufacturing process that results in fast volume ramps. It produces 1216 × 1216-pixel resolution, operates at a 1.1-kHz frame rate, and enables a transfer rate of 20 MB/s. It encodes information onto the data-carrying laser beam.
