PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2007 -- New capabilities for modeling surface textures and an improved optimization engine are among the features of the latest version of LightTools illumination design and analysis software from Optical Research Associates (ORA).

ora-light-tools.gifLightTools 5.4 introduces a surface texture feature that enables users to create an arbitrary geometrical object then produce surfaces in which the object is positioned repeatedly in a variable pattern. The texture objects can be individually moved, rotated and scaled within the pattern, and these parameters can be automatically refined using the LightTools optimization module. This advanced texture modeling and optimization capability is particularly useful for designing critical components of LCD backlights, microlens arrays, digital micromirror device (DMD) projection systems and light pipe components.

Two new merit functions enhance the LightTools optimization module for many common illumination applications. A focus merit function facilitates the optimization of optical system illuminance at a specified receiver location, and a collimate merit function makes it easier to maximize light intensity projected in a given direction.

Also, improvements to the optimization algorithms can produce faster convergence results and increase a user’s optimization solution success rate.

LightTools 5.4 also offers improved data exchange with CAD/CAM programs by adding support for the CATIA V5 file format.
