SURREY, England, July 30, 2007 -- Fujikura Europe Ltd. has introduced a line of compact large-diameter fiber (LDF) fusion splicers that can splice any type of fiber, using an arc fusion technique that eliminates the need for an external gas supply.

Designed for OEM, research, medical, automotive and fiber laser markets, the compact splicers are equipped with wide-view cameras to focus on an entire image, to the maximum LDF diameter, and use a high-power arc discharge unit with modified electrodes to withstand the high current. An intuitive graphical interface enables users to program the products' automated fujisplicer.gifalignment system, reducing errors when splicing complex fibers. They also feature attenuation modes for polarization-maintaining fibers.

Fernando Terceiro, splicer business team leader at Fujikura Europe, said, "Fiber optic technology now underpins a vast number of industrial products and applications, from fiber laser manufacture to welding and cutting on car production lines, and biomedical processes such as laser eye surgery. To serve these markets effectively, splicers must be compact, cost-effective and user-friendly, as operators may have to work with different types of fiber, in many different environments, often without specific training or experience in fiber processing."

Fujikura will exhibit and demonstrated its splicer portfolio at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2007 (Booth 12015).
