Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has launched a series of compact air-cooled Peltier accessories for use with its ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometers. They deliver precise temperature control for applications in the life and food sciences and in pharmaceutical, environmental and chemical laboratories. The solid-state devices comprise a semiconductor junction bonded to two plates to which a direct electrical current is applied. They require a dispersal system to remove the heat that builds up during operations. Because they use air rather than water, they eliminate the need for monitoring recirculating water levels, and for adding antifreeze and antibacterial mixtures. Built-in magnetic stirring helps maintain thermal balance throughout the sample by eliminating gradients within the cuvette. Users can choose from a range of temperatures between 20 and 60 °C.
