Fiber-Pigtailed Laser Diodes

MONROVIA, Calif., March 12, 2008 -- Ondax has introduced multimode fiber-pigtailed, single-mode wavelength-stabilized laser diodes that have a linewidth of less than 50 MHz.

Wavelength stabilization is achieved by optical feedback using Ondax's volume holographic grating (VHG), the PowerLocker. The PowerLocker VHG is a glass grating that diffracts a defined efficiency at a specific wavelength. The gratings increase spectral brightness of laser diodes, locking their wavelength and increasing temperature stability and yield. The PowerLocker VHG is available in wavelengths from 350 nm to 3 µm, Ondax said.

Customer response to our stabilized lasers has been consistent; these are rock-solid lasers that do not exhibit any mode hopping. Our customers are using these lasers in many applications where a true single-mode robust laser with a small footprint is essential to enable, for example, their handheld products. Furthermore, our TO-can package allows for direct drop-in replacement without any time consuming and costly redesign of existing systems and instrumentation. This is critical in today's competitive market."

The lasers are packaged in standard 5.6-mm TO cans, fiber pigtailed, and include a FC/APC connector. Standard wavelengths are 636-640 nm with greater than 4 mW output power, 654-662 nm with greater than 15 mW output power, 681-685 nm with greater than 20 mW output power, and 780.25 nm and 781-789 nm with greater than 40 mW output power. Custom wavelengths, TO-can diodes, and fiber-coupled modules are also available.

Applications for the fiber-pigtailed lasers include: Raman spectroscopy, flow cytometry, metrology, bioinstrumentation, graphic arts, analytical instrumentation, sensing, and data storage, among others.
