Stacked Laser Arrays Deliver High Power

Intense-Ltd_hermes_stack.jpgIntense Ltd. has expanded its Hermes family of high-power quasi-CW stacked laser arrays with models qualified to military standards. They combine high reliability with robust modular packaging and are available in a standard wavelength of 808 nm with power levels up to 900 W. They degrade by <5% over 2 × 108 shots and provide long working lifetimes and reduced costs for OEM developers.

Based on proprietary and patented quantum well intermixing technology, the lasers are suitable for applications including rangefinding, target designation, illumination and pumping. The arrays are available as vertically or horizontally stacked assemblies of up to 10 bars, with lensed and unlensed options offered. Standard configurations include a four-bar stacked array with minimum 360-W peak output power; a six-bar array with minimum 540 W; an eight-bar array with minimum 720 W; and a 10-bar array with minimum 900 W. Operating voltages are <8, <12, <16 and <20 W, respectively. Other wavelengths are available upon request. All models have 38 100-μm emitters per bar set at a pitch of 250 μm.

The quantum well intermixing process increases the quantum well bandgap of a semiconductor laser in a controlled and precise manner so that active and passive sections can be created within the same laser cavity. Passive nonabsorbing mirrors are created at the facet regions of the cavities to avoid catastrophic optical mirror damage.
