Digital 3-D cameras

SOUTHINGTON, Conn., May 12, 2009 – For robotic guidance and materials handling/logistics systems, Baumer Ltd. has introduced the TZG01 digital 3-D cameras that are designed to replace multiple camera systems and to extend the potential of 3-D object detection. Equipped with an integrated time-of-flight sensor, they perform rapid spatial capture of objects and components and provide data on target dimensions and position with a single snapshot that captures and displays both a distance and a gray-scale image.

Operating at up to 54 fps, the cameras offer an acquisition range of 0.3 to 5 m. The cameras integrate the lens, a sensor and an LED into a compact and robust IP67-rated housing and are suitable for use in harsh environments where they are exposed to moisture and particulate contamination. As a generic programming interface, Baumer-GAPI facilitates the cameras’ integration into an application. The company’s software development kit includes all libraries, help files and tools for camera control.

For data transfer, the cameras are equipped with a standard fast Ethernet interface that delivers data on cables as long as 100 m. They also have a Power over Ethernet (PoE) interface where both data and power run on a single Ethernet cable. PoE technology simplifies the mechanical design and increases the reliability of the vision systems, reducing installation costs and maintenance expenses.

The cameras can view objects on robotic arms, robotic pick-and-place systems, automated materials handling lines and in logistics systems. Applications include palletizing, luggage and package sorting, volume and area identification, part location and positioning, presence and completion checks, and collision detection. Other uses include automotive assembly, warehousing, packaging, security and surveillance.
