Coherent Inc., Laser Group, has released optically pumped semiconductor laser technology that provides high-power laser output from a single-mode fiber. It can produce more than 500 mW of 980-nm output, in contrast to other 980-nm pump lasers that are limited to less than 200 mW. These lasers pump erbium-doped fiber amplifiers that boost optical signals in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems. The company says the new technology provides a simple and cost-effective means of preparing existing communications networks for the future.
