Key Technology Inc. has released the FluoRaptor fluorescence-sensing laser sorter, which detects and removes defects, extraneous vegetable matter and foreign material from a variety of fresh and frozen vegetables and potato products, based on differences in the fluorescent properties of the objects. Able to detect differing levels of chlorophyll, as well as size, shape and subtle color differences, the device differentiates peas from pods, and vines and leaves of the same color, whether the product is fresh or frozen, or blanched or unblanched. It detects and removes husk and shank from corn and removes insects, animal parts and other substances from fresh-cut products. With a high-resolution laser scanner, it detects submillimeter-size defects. Its color cameras can be configured to sense a combination of visible color and IR light.
