Narrow-beam SMT LEDs
PALATINE, Ill., July 1, 2009 – Lumex has launched the QuasarBrite narrow-beam surface-mount-technology (SMT) LEDs that provide users with a tight beam of high-intensity red, green or blue light. They offer a light beam of +/-6° to +/-10° which, the company says, results in a 93% reduction in beam angle compared to conventional SMT LEDs, making them suitable for use in medical device, security, sensor and visible lighting applications that require concentrated light.

QuasarBriteNarrowBeamLEDs.jpgThe LED is mounted upside down and shines directly into an internal parabolic reflector, providing high-intensity brightness in a narrow beam of light without the need for external optics, thus reducing cost and real estate. The elimination of the need for external optics also simplifies manufacturing processes.

The internal parabolic reflector collimates the light into a beam, producing high-intensity light with standard energy consumption of 75 mW or less. The LEDs provide intensity of up to 100 cd at a view angle of +/-6 degrees.

The RoHS-compliant devices are available in the following sizes: 4 mm (provides beam angles of 12° to 22°), 6 mm (provides beam angles of 14° to 24°) and 8 mm (provides beam angle of 14° to 18°).
