Small Sealed 1-kW CO2 Laser
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 8, 2009 – Coherent Inc. has unveiled a small sealed 1-kW CO2 laser. The compact Diamond E-1000 measures less than 1497 × 471 × 384 mm and weighs 173 kg, including its integrated power supply. It is suited for use in small machines or space-sensitive applications involving cutting, perforating and drilling of paper, plastic films, plastics, glass, carbon composites and thin metals.
The lightweight pulsed laser requires no external gas supply, and the only connections to the laser are a power cord and a water hose, making it easy to mount on a moving robot arm.

Its sealed design eliminates costly external laser gas as well as service of the gas blower required to support an external gas supply. The designed-in reliability and built-in advanced diagnostics minimize unscheduled downtime and maintenance. The ability to bring the compact laser head into proximity to the workpiece eliminates the costs and complexity associated with long beam delivery systems.

The beam characteristics enable the laser to reach cutting speeds equivalent to traditional 2-kW CO2 lasers. These characteristics, known as Brilliance, include spatial mode quality of M² <1.2 and a square wave pulse shape that delivers up to 2.5 kW of peak power. Brilliance enables faster cutting of nonmetals, cutting of mild steel sheets up to 6 mm in thickness and cutting of stainless steel sheets up to 3 mm in thickness.

The laser is liquid-cooled and equipped with onboard Internet-accessible diagnostics and control. It operates at wavelengths from 10.2 to 10.8 µm and outputs 1000 W. Peak effective power is >2500 W, power stability is ±5%, full-angle beam divergence is <15 mrad, and pulse frequency is from single-shot to 200 kHz. Operating temperature ranges from 5 to 45 °C, and peak current is <628 A for up to 1 ms. Input voltage is 48 ±1% VDC.
