SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 4, 2010 – Spectra-Physics, a Newport Corp. brand, announces a new addition to its Tristar family of Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state industrial lasers. The Tristar 355-2 is suitable for high-throughput LED scribing and for demanding ultraviolet applications where highly focused spots, precision positioning and high throughput are required. It provides >2 W of 355-nm output at 90 kHz and >1.2 W at 150 kHz, and a short pulse width of <25 ns. Repetition rate is from 1 to 300 kHz.

The rugged laser is designed and tested for high reliability and extended life. Features include a motorized third-harmonic crystal shifter for stable ultraviolet power over the life of the product, a proprietary and patented Automatic Laser Purification System to actively clean the ultraviolet laser cavity and extend laser life, and automatic data logging for cradle-to-grave product and process traceability.

For scribing LED substrates, the high peak power and good beam quality result in cleaner scribe lines, higher throughput and higher brightness LEDs. The high peak power enables the removal of material using a short burst of high energy, reducing undesired thermal effects that can overheat the work surface and causing less heat-related damage to individual LED devices.

The laser delivers a TEM00 beam with M2 <1.2, and vertical polarization of >300:1. Near-field boresight tolerance is <1 mm, and far-field, <1 mrad. Beam pointing stability is <20 µrad, pulse-to-pulse stability is <4%, beam roundness is >90%, beam diameter is 240 ±75 µm, and warm-up time is <30 min.

Other applications include rapid prototyping, marking and stereolithography. The device delivers a low cost per watt and low cost of operation over the life of the laser. It is pumped with field-replaceable ProLite diodes that extend laser life and lower cost of operation.
