POINTE-CLAIRE, Quebec, Canada, Feb. 11, 2010 – Future Lighting Solutions has announced an upgrade to its Usable Light Tool (ULT) for LED application developers. ULT 2.0 enhances users’ ability to make informed decisions on selecting the appropriate LED, LED count, LED drive current and heat sink to determine the usable light that will be generated under real-world conditions for solid-state lighting applications.
Users can easily visualize the LED system safe operating area and how parameters such as flux, efficacy, forward voltage, power consumption and junction temperature are affected by factors such as variations in ambient temperature, heat sink thermal resistance and the LED forward voltage bin range.
The primary ULT 2.0 enhancements include the addition of new variables to be considered in output calculations, such as circuit board and heat sink selection; the ability to generate up to 40 parametric output charts as a function of LED drive current, ambient temperature, heat sink thermal resistance, LED forward voltage bin range and LED flux bin range; a dynamic link to relevant LED datasheets for fast reference; faster toggling between the input and results sections; a link to the ULT 2.0 tutorial and demonstration video; and full compatibility with the company’s SSL Designer, a complementary tool for luminaire system level design.
By leveraging the various output charts from ULT 2.0, users can reduce the number of iterative scenarios they must run to make clear design trade-off decisions, and the charts facilitate validation and justification of these decisions to colleagues and management to further decrease time to market.
