Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has released the xcellence series of research-grade microscopy systems for live-cell fluorescence imaging. They offer advanced techniques such as total internal reflection fluorescence and highly inclined and laminated optical microscopy via the cell^TIRF module, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching via the cell^FRAP module and spinning disc confocal microscopy via the cell^SPIN module. The microscopes feature four laser lines with separate motorized angle control to enable synchronized acquisition with identical penetration depth, and proprietary software permits the user to set the incident angles and penetration depths.

The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained.
