The ultrasmall and lightweight micro-objective from Rainbow Optics Co. is suitable for scanning images and focusing or condensing applications in biotech and fluorescence spectroscopy. The optical system, which is a multiple lens infinity-corrected achromat, provides a numerical aperture of 0.90, magnification of 50x and on-axis resolving power of <1 μm. Weighing only 3 g, the device has a diameter of 12.7 mm and is 13.5 mm long.

aperture
An opening or hole through which radiation or matter may pass.
fluorescence
The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained. In other words, fluorescence is the luminescence that persists for less than about 10-8 s after excitation.
fluorescence spectroscopy
The spectroscopic study of radiation emitted by the process of fluorescence.
lens
A transparent optical component consisting of one or more pieces of optical glass with surfaces so curved (usually spherical) that they serve to converge or diverge the transmitted rays from an object, thus forming a real or virtual image of that object.
magnification
The ratio of the size of the image of an object to that of the object. The ratio of the linear size of the image to that of the object is lateral magnification. Angular magnification is the ratio of the apparent angular size of the image observed through an optical device to that of the object viewed by the unaided eye. Longitudinal magnification is the ratio of the longitudinal or axial dimension of an image to the corresponding dimension of the object.

scanning
The successive analysis or synthesizing of the light values or other similar characteristics of the components of a picture area, following a given method.
