Aculight Corp. has introduced the Renoir R-1850, a fiber-coupled laser for infrared neural stimulation. The result of a joint development effort with Vanderbilt University, the device offers mid-infrared light in user-selectable pulse widths and repetitions. A fiber optic interface provides increased spatial specificity and decreased cell damage as compared with traditional electrical stimulation. The system may be used to identify nerve root functionality, to run nerve conduction studies, to research multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, to guide surgical resection and to treat chronic conditions such as pain, depression and Parkinson’s disease.
