The Spectro MS from Spectro Analytical Instruments is a mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma that simultaneously records the entire elemental spectrum between lithium and uranium for every analysis. It features an ion optic that transports ions from the plasma into the spectrometer, while removing neutral particles and photons from the beam; a double focusing sector field mass spectrometer with a Mattauch-Herzog design; and an electrostatic analyzer and a permanent magnet that direct the ions onto a focal plane without additional scanning of the ion beam. A direct charge detector with 4800 channels is placed in the focal plane, recording with an average of 20 channels per isotope.

1. A bundle of light rays that may be parallel, converging or diverging. 2. A concentrated, unidirectional stream of particles. 3. A concentrated, unidirectional flow of electromagnetic waves.
electrostatic analyzer
A device that permits only electrons within a narrow velocity range to pass through it, while rejecting those above and below.
mass spectrometer
A device used to measure the masses and relative concentrations of atoms and molecules. It utilizes the Lorentz force generated by external magnetic field on a moving charged particle, in which the particles are deflected by the magnetic field according to their masses. Once deflected, the particles are detected and recorded electrically to provide a mass spectrum of the input beam of ions.
A gas made up of electrons and ions.
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
