A new Ti:sapphire ultrafast laser amplifier from Coherent Inc., the Legend Elite Duo-HP, offers >15 W of output power and pulse energy of up to 10 mJ. The kilohertz-class thermoelectrically cooled amplifier can be configured to provide output pulse durations of <25 fs, <35 fs, <130 fs or 0.5 to 2 ps with repetition rates ranging from 1 to 10 kHz. The system incorporates two stages of amplification: a regenerative amplifier followed by a simple single-pass amplifier. This approach ensures good beam quality, stability and efficiency compared to designs based on multipass amplification. Applications span several areas of research, including time-resolved spectroscopy using multiple optical parametric amplifiers, terahertz generation and high-field physics.

A device that enlarges and strengthens a signal's output without significantly distorting its original waveshape. There are amplifiers for acoustical, optical and electronic signals.
pulse duration
The lifetime of a laser pulse, generally defined as the time interval between the halfpower points on the leading and trailing edges of the pulse.
regenerative amplifier
A type of multiple-pass amplifier in which no optical leakage is allowed until a finite number of passes has occurred; at this time the entire cavity output is released as one pulse.
