RANCHO DOMINGUEZ, Calif., Oct. 1, 2010 — The SpecVette disposable cuvettes manufactured by Aline Inc. feature a short path length and fit standard spectrometers. Available in path lengths of 250, 500 and 1000 µm, they exhibit UV transparency to 220 nm. They feature an easy to fill pipette tip port and dual chambers. The low-volume precision cuvettes for absorbance applications offer an economical alternative to quartz cuvettes. They require only 25, 50 or 100 µl of sample solution, deliver precise path lengths to ±1% and exhibit no parallax as found in molded cuvettes. Each contains two chambers, the second of which can be used for a second sample, a blank or a reference. The user adds the sample directly from a pipettor, and the flat form factor is suitable for use in microscopes. A universal adapter allows the cuvettes to be used with any spectrometer with a Z-height of 12 to 20 mm. Optional flow cell connections or transparent interdigitated electrodes further expand their capabilities for specialty applications. Custom modifications, including valves and porous membranes, can be made to any of the company’s standard products. The company says that the cuvettes are a disposable alternative to expensive, difficult to fill, glass thin-path types and, with a variety of path lengths, users can make measurements within the correct dynamic range of their spectrometers. Applications include opaque samples that produce a lot of scatter and skew the baseline, and optically dense samples that change their spectrum to be in the correct dynamic range if the sample is diluted. They also can be used to eliminate dilution errors for protein quantitation.
