SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 20, 2010 — For organic LED (OLED) frit welding, plastic welding and soldering applications, Coherent Inc. has introduced the HighLight FAP (fiber array package) 60/810, a fiber-delivered, turnkey diode laser system that provides 60 W of output power at 810 nm. It is engineered to deliver high reliability, convenience and good process uniformity for demanding high-throughput industrial applications such as frit welding of OLED displays and other thermal processing tasks. The system offers power stability of <±1% and a fast, jitter-free rise time of <50 µs. An optional four-lens imager enables variable magnification and a top-hat irradiance profile at the work surface. The system also uses a modular fiber delivery system that minimizes downtime and, hence, cost of ownership, in harsh industrial environments or with semi-skilled labor. The 15-m delivery fiber is attached to the laser source via standard connectors, meaning that it can be quickly exchanged if damaged. An integrated monitor immediately shuts down the diode if it detects back-reflected light, minimizing the risk of diode damage. The system offers a long lifetime, and the underlying FAP technology uses company-grown AAA semiconductor material, with tens of thousands of FAP units in the field. A typical thermal processing application is frit welding of OLED screens for smart phones. These screens are created as a glass-OLED-glass sandwich in large panels, and the laser is used to fuse the front and rear glass plates prior to device singulation. The top-hat profile eliminates the possibility of peripheral material damage.
