Hamamatsu Corp. has introduced two series of back-thinned fast Fourier transform charge-coupled devices designed for scientific applications requiring detection of low light levels. The S7170-0909 and S7171-0909 series feature >90% quantum efficiency from the UV to near-IR with a low dark current of 3 e- per pixel per second at -30 °C. They have stable spectral response curves in the 200- to 1100-nm range. Both devices have sapphire windows protecting the active area and are mounted in a 24-pin ceramic package that measures 50 x 22.9 x 7.7 mm. The S7171-0909 series can have either a one- or two-stage built-in thermoelectric cooler for cooling to -10 or -30 °C. Applications include UV imaging, bio-photon observation, scientific measuring instruments and optical analyzers.
