SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2011 — Coherent Inc. has launched the Obis family of integrated lasers featuring true plug-and-play simplicity for continuous-wave applications. Based on direct diode and optically pumped semiconductor laser technologies and using state-of-the-art miniaturized components, they have all the control functions integrated inside the compact laser head, in contrast to the traditional architecture of head, dedicated cable and controller. With power up to 100 mW, the initial product offering includes models at seven wavelengths from the UV through the near-IR: 375, 405, 445, 488, 640, 660 and 785 nm, all with a circular TEM00 output beam. The lasers offer functionality developed in response to customer requests for greater ease of integration and operation. They include multiple interface control options as well as operational monitoring functions, all integrated in the laser head that measures 38 × 40 × 70 mm. They permit direct high-speed digital and analog modulation up to 150 MHz. Every model offers identical form, fit and function, mechanical, optical and electrical, enabling end users to rapidly switch wavelengths in any setup and providing faster, lower-cost time to market for OEMs, both for new products and for upgraded wavelengths in existing instruments. Applications include life sciences, metrology and inspection. Examples include fluorescence-based techniques such as flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and array readers for drug discovery. The wavelength scalability enables optimum excitation of target fluorophores.
