The CoalPro II microscope photometer from Craic Technologies Inc. performs optical analysis of vitrinite and other macerals commonly found in coal, kerogen and source rock. The instrument is designed to determine the energy grade of these potential power sources rapidly and accurately and is employed to ensure that the materials used in energy generation are optimal. The CoalPro measures the amount of light reflected from samples of the coal blend at hundreds of points, after which a statistical analysis is done by its software. The results determine the amount of vitrinite in the sample, the sample’s thermal maturity and, therefore, its energy content. Previously, hundreds of sample measurements were required. The CoalPro is sensitive to fluorescence and enables the collection of full-color images.
