Varioptic has announced its second-generation liquid lens product family. The B617 programmable liquid lens is the first offering in the Baltic line that integrates optical image stabilization and autofocus functionality into the same element. The company says that it is a breakthrough for products such as smart phones that can now provide much higher still photo and video quality. The lenses are also used in dental and biometric cameras and other medical devices. The B617 compensates for handshake blur and improves low-light image quality. With no moving parts, the liquid lens is robust to shocks and uses up to 90% less power than voice coil motor actuators. It easily fits into typical mobile products and smart phone cameras.
