Newton Research Labs Inc. has introduced a tool for use by nuclear power utility operators to measure the interior of a nuclear reactor underwater. Delivering precise in-vessel measurements, the NM200UW nuclear laser scanner is designed to operate underwater, in-vessel, within either pressurized water or boiling water reactors. The scanner produces a point cloud output so detailed that when used with industry-standard 3-D software, a full measurable computer-aided design model can be generated. It can provide precise dimensions of features, cracks and welds. The scanner provides nuclear utility operators with a means to verify the accuracy of as-built reactor blueprints created many years ago. Video cameras, their other evaluation option, cannot take precise measurements.
