ERM-102 Polarization Meter
OTTAWA, May 18, 2011 — General Photonics has announced the ERM-102, a dual-channel polarization extinction ratio (PER) meter that enables simultaneous measurement of PER on two input channels, as well as comparison of the power on both channels.
The functions make it suitable for fiber optic sensing and telecommunications applications, including characterizing Y-branch waveguides; polarization-maintaining (PM) couplers; polarization beamsplitters; PM fiber connectorizations; PM coupler and polarization beamsplitter manufacturing; depolarizer characterization; PM fiber fusion splicing; PM fiber coil production; and quality assurance for fiber gyros.
With a PER dynamic range of 50 dB, a wavelength of 400 nm and an angular resolution of 0.06°, the polarization instrument is designed to measure simultaneously the PER of a device with two outputs; for example, in a Y-branch waveguide, PM coupler or polarization beamsplitter. It also can measure a single-channel output.
The instrument can accurately and instantaneously obtain the coupling ratio of a two-output device and can measure the output degree of polarization of depolarizers. Its bright graphic organic LED display allows information to be seen at large viewing angles or at a distance. It has four measurement speeds ranging from 0.1 to 1 s per cycle, with the high speed for live alignment and the low speed for accuracy.
The measurement data can be stored and recalled at the touch of a button for comparison purposes. The ERM-102 automatically measures and displays the PER, polarization axis angle, power and estimated degree of polarization for each channel, as well as the power ratio between channels.
It operates from 1260 to 1650 nm, and there are two built-in calibrated wavelengths for power measurement: 1550 and 1310 nm, allowing users to select which to use for a particular measurement, although PER measurements are accurate across the entire range. Other wavelength ranges or calibrated wavelengths are possible upon request.
For measurements at or slower than 0.4 s per cycle, PER ranges are 0 to ~50 dB for input power from −5 to 10 dBm, and 0 to ~30 dB for input power from −25 to −5 dBm.
