Laser Components Inc. offers ion-assisted deposition coating for laser components. The company says components coated using this technique can withstand the high power densities of industrial Nd:YAG lasers, including power levels of 2.5 J/cm2 for 90-ns pulses with a 5-kHz repetition rate. Ion-assisted deposition produces dielectric layers with a low moisture content, which reduces the breathing effect that compromises the effectiveness of high reflectivity coatings. Sensitive substrates and the ends of optical fibers with connectors can be cold-coated with the technique, which avoids high evaporation temperatures.
