SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 15, 2011 — The HighLight D-Series, a line of diode laser systems from Coherent Inc., delivers high power and an increased range of “smart” output beam shapes. The HighLight 8000D, with output power of 8 kW, is a powerful industrial direct diode laser system with free-space beam delivery that preserves the inherent brightness of the diode laser source and enables the use of an optical system with a 275-mm working distance.

Together, these factors translate into enhanced laser capabilities in industrial processing applications. In cladding, they yield a high material deposition rate of up to 18 lb/h, allowing the laser to cover large areas in a short amount of time. Production speed is increased in both cladding and heat treating due to the laser diodes’ higher power and longer line beams, which enable processing of larger areas in a single pass.

The models in the series include products with output powers of 2.8, 4, 6 and 8 kW at 975 nm. The design of the compact laser head enables a wide range of output beam size options that won’t restrict application deployment. The 6- and 8-kW models are offered with line beams 1 mm wide and either 6, 12 or 24 mm long. Lower-power systems have additional beam lengths of 3, 4 or 5 mm. An optional beam shaping accessory can expand the 1-mm beam width dimension to 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 12 mm.

Various industrial options facilitate ease of use, including an air knife that protects the laser from back-splattered material, heat and returned laser light, extending system lifetime. A pyrometer for monitoring work surface temperature enables closed-loop control of laser power during heat treatment and cladding.

Features to enhance productivity include a laser system control unit with a simple graphical interface, and remote diagnostics that allow system operation to be analyzed by company service personnel over the Internet.
