Lumerical Solutions Inc. has released Mode Solutions 5.0, an upgrade to its fast broadband omnidirectional waveguide design software. The upgrade includes both an eigensolver and an electromagnetic propagator to address optical components measuring up to hundreds of microns, including silicon photonic components, optical interconnects, photonic crystal devices and resonators. It incorporates advances in distributed and concurrent computing and optimization to provide job distribution capabilities that streamline the design of complex integrated optical devices for next-generation instruments, components and subsystems. The propagator feature is based on a vectorial approach that provides 2.5-D accuracy, with only the computational expense of a 2-D algorithm, and it accurately simulates silicon photonic integrated circuits.
