DURHAM, N.C., Oct. 12, 2011 — Cree Inc. has announced the commercial availability of its TEMPO (thermal, electrical, mechanical, photometric and optical) services, a comprehensive set of quantitative and qualitative tests and analyses for LED-based lighting fixtures and lamps. The services combine the company’s experience with customer LED systems and the use of calibrated test equipment to provide LED lighting manufacturers and end users with confidence in product designs.
The services help lighting OEMs speed time to market and overcome common design challenges. Third-party labs currently provide testing services, but the company has identified many aspects of end-product quality that are not and cannot be examined by third parties, including chemical compatibility between materials used in the luminaire and the LEDs, the effectiveness of mixing slightly different color LEDs for enhanced color consistency and TM-21 LED lifetime projections.
TEMPO give manufacturers a competitive advantage by helping them avoid costly design mistakes and by providing access to a broad range of test environments that would be cost-prohibitive for them to build and operate.
The company offers a variety of TEMPO services to LED luminaire makers, depending upon their product development needs. The flagship service is the TEMPO 21, a comprehensive LED luminaire test that measures and analyzes a final product design before submitting it for LM-79 certification. TEMPO 21 examines all aspects of quality that the company has identified as critical. Test results and performance data are provided in a professional, easy-to-read format through the TEMPO report.
TEMPO 21 also includes consultation time with a Cree application engineer to review the test results and highlight possible areas for design improvement.
The company offers two quick turnaround testing services so that LED system designers do not have to procure, calibrate or operate their own testing equipment during the design validation stage of development. TEMPO SPOT provides measurements of flux, efficacy and chromaticity for luminaires and replacement lamps. TEMPO FLASH provides measurements of flux, chromaticity and throw for torches and other portable lighting designs.
