SLED for OCT Applications

Exalos AG has introduced a fiber-coupled and cooled superluminescent light-emitting diode (SLED) centered at ~1060 nm and matching the water absorption window. With a typical 3-dB optical bandwidth of 70 nm and high optical output power of 20 mW, the SLED EXS210010 is suited for optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other imaging applications requiring a light source in the near-IR. Electrostatic discharge protection features are included in the 14-pin butterfly package. Compared with retinal analysis with SLEDs in the 800-nm regime, examination with a center wavelength of 1060 nm has advantages, including deeper penetration into the choroid with choroidal/sclera interface detection, choroidal penetration independent of fundus pigmentation, and better retinal OCT performance in cataract eyes. The SLED is available as a benchtop or OEM unit.
