The FiberStream forward error correction chipset is for OC-48/STM-16 SONET/SDH applications. The device's manufacturer, Vitesse Semiconductor Corp., says the chipset reduces costs and improves the performance of WDM and other optical communications equipment. The VSC9210 forward error correction device allows a link with a bit-error rate of 10-5 to operate at 10-20 by correcting transmission errors. In addition, it can be employed with 2.5-Gb/s telecommunications systems.
