Olympus Europa Holding GmbH has released the XLPLN25XSVMP ScaleView 25x objective lens with a numerical aperture of 1 for deep imaging of thick biological samples. The ScaleView approach allows researchers to create accurate 3-D structural representations of brain tissue. The use of such samples has been limited by the effects of tissue opacity and light scattering. To counter this, the new objective has a working distance of 4 mm and works alongside Olympus' ScaleView-A2 clearing agent, which renders samples nearly translucent while preserving fluorescent signals. Image quality is then maximized as the objective is optimized to match the refractive index properties of the clearing agent. When used as part of an Olympus FluoView FV1000MPE multiphoton system, the objective makes it possible to peer deeper into samples.
