PROVIDENCE, R.I., April 11, 2012 — Custom-fabricated sapphire optics that can withstand salt water and high pressure for military and commercial submersible applications are being introduced by Meller Optics Inc. They can be manufactured to specifications up to 1 in. thick with mounting holes, slots, wedges and special edge treatments. Suitable for installation in submersible and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), sapphire optics can withstand up to 10,000 lb/sq in., depending upon aspect ratio and mounting technique. Available in round and rectangular configurations, the optics can be fabricated as lenses, windows and viewports from 6.35 to 254 mm in diameter and 0.5 to 25.4 mm thick, with or without antireflection coatings. Featuring Moh 9 hardness, which is second only to diamond, windows can be fabricated with flatness held to 0.5 fringes of HeNe and parallelism from 20 to 2 arcsec.
