SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 4, 2012 — Coherent Inc. has expanded its family of Legend ultrafast amplifiers with the launch of the Legend Elite Duo HE+, which delivers >12 mJ per pulse at a 1-kHz repetition rate. The thermoelectrically cooled amplifier avoids the use of cryogenic cooling, simplifying operation and maintenance, and resulting in lower cost of ownership and higher uptime.

It uses components and subsystems designed to support Carrier to Envelope Phase stabilized operation, the ultrafast technology most sensitive to noise and stability.

Based on two-stage amplification, it combines high pulse energy with energy stability of <0.5% rms, pointing stability of <10 μrad rms and beam quality with M2 <1.5. The seed input is amplified in a regenerative amplifier designed to ensure good beam quality and stability. The output of the regenerative amplifier is then boosted to higher pulse energy by use of a single-pass amplifier. Both amplifier stages use a proprietary slab-rod design to enable efficient thermoelectric cooling of the Ti:sapphire gain crystal and full exploitation of the company’s >45-mJ Evolution pump lasers.

Applications include pump-probe spectroscopy using multiple optical parametric amplifiers, high harmonic generation to enable experiments in attosecond physics, generation of high-power terahertz pulses and photocathode illumination for applications in high-field physics.
