NORTH SUTTON, N.H., July 18, 2012 — Labsphere Inc. has expanded its illumia LED and light measurement product range with the introduction of illumia lite. The portable system packages the accuracy of sphere-based flux and color measurements in a handheld device suitable for use on the production floor, in the lab or in the field.

The illumia lite overcomes the drawbacks inherent in other handhelds by incorporating a spectrometer calibrated for absolute spectral flux and employs an integrating sphere in its design. This combination delivers more complete spectral flux measurement than simple illuminance meters using near cosine receivers. The ergonomic instrument measures both luminous flux and color of a device under test, including LEDs and other sources up to 1 cm in diameter. A built-in auxiliary lamp provides self-absorption correction for accurate results.

The luminous flux range is 0.1 to 5000 lm, with a wavelength resolution of <5 nm and accuracy of <0.5 nm. Data is retrieved via USB connection to a laptop or PC and analyzed with proprietary MtrX-Spec software. The software calculates all industry-standard color parameters such as X, Y, correlated color temperature, color rendering index, lumens and spectral irradiance.

GLOSSARY
color rendering index
A CIE index describing the changes in color of standard test objects when the illumination is changed from a standard to a test illuminant.
correlated color temperature
Temperature of the blackbody having chromaticity nearest to that of the test source on a specified chromaticity diagram.
integrating sphere
A hollow sphere coated internally with a white diffusing material and provided with openings for incident beam, specimen and detector used for measuring the diffuse reflectance or transmittance of objects.
spectral irradiance
Irradiance per unit wavelength interval at a given wavelength, expressed in watts per unit area per unit wavelength interval.
spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
