SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 24, 2012 — Coherent Inc. has extended its integrated laser machine tool products with the META platform, a unibody chassis design that provides improved mechanical stability. The rigid, single weldment results in faster cutting speeds and better positioning repeatability. The cutting bed has been enlarged to accommodate standard European sheet sizes of 1.25 × 1.25 m.

The operator interface has been changed to an industrial-type controller, an ergonomic monitor/keyboard assembly directly mounted on the side of the chassis. All interface cables for the system are contained within the machine assembly, enhancing its ruggedness.

Improvements have been implemented in the software, including system automation and ease of use through a multilingual interface. Features include automatic focus, advanced capacitive height sensing and a fully integrated machine vision system.

When configured with a Coherent 1-kW CO2 laser (Diamond E-1000), the META system can process a wide variety of metals and nonmetals, such as plastics, wood, fabrics, leather, paper and thin films. With this laser, the system can cut stainless steel in thicknesses of up to 3 mm, aluminum up to 2 mm and mild steel up to 6 mm.
