Point Grey Research Inc. has added a 2.8-MP camera to its Grasshopper3 USB 3.0 scientific imaging family. The new model, GS3-U3-28S5, is suitable for life sciences applications including flow-scanning cytometry and fluorescence imaging.

It is based on color and monochrome versions of the Sony ICX674 sensor, a 2/3-in. CCD featuring 4.54-μm square pixels and capable of sending 1932 × 1452 images at 26 fps. The sensor supports high-definition 1030p30 imaging and uses Sony’s Exview HAD CCD II technology to improve quantum efficiency and increase sensitivity, including into the near-infrared.

The camera supports exposures to 30 s and provides quantum efficiency of 67% at 525 nm, dynamic range of 63 dB and dark current of 1.27 e per second. It is compatible with a wide range of USB 3.0-enabled desktop and laptop computers for which digital interfaces such as Camera Link are not an option.
